Understanding Your Home's Sewer & Drain System

Every drain in your home — sinks, showers, toilets, and floor drains — connects to a network of pipes that ultimately leads to the city sewer main or a septic tank. Knowing how this system works helps you spot problems early and understand the repairs we recommend.

Branch Drain Lines

Individual pipes that carry wastewater from each fixture — sinks, tubs, showers — to the main stack. Typically 1½"–2" diameter PVC or ABS. Older homes often have galvanized or cast iron branch lines that corrode over time. We offer sewer camera inspections and free re-piping estimates for both crawlspace and slab homes.

Main Building Branch Line

The large vertical pipe (usually 3"–4") that collects all branch lines and runs down through the house to the sewer lateral. Also vents sewer gases out through the roof.

Main Sewer Line

The underground pipe connecting your home to the city main. This is the most common location for root intrusion, bellying, and blockages — and is the homeowner's responsibility. This pipe can be replaced using trenchless pipe bursting or pipe lining to save your landscape.

P-Traps

The curved section under every drain that holds a small amount of water, creating a seal that blocks sewer gases from entering your living space.

Vent Pipes

Pipes that run up through the roof to allow air into the drain system. Without proper venting, drains gurgle, slow down, and traps can siphon dry.

Cleanout Access Points

Capped fittings installed at key points in the system that give plumbers direct access to clear blockages without disassembling fixtures.

Noticing slow drains, gurgling sounds, or sewage odors? Those are early warning signs.

Sewer & Drain FAQs

How much does drain cleaning cost in Los Angeles?
A-Team Plumbing Services offers flat-rate drain cleaning starting at $49 for tub/shower drains and $75 for toilet, laundry, and sink drains during standard hours (8am–4pm).
What is trenchless sewer replacement?
Trenchless sewer replacement uses pipe bursting or pipe lining technology to replace a damaged sewer line with minimal excavation — protecting your landscaping, driveway, and hardscape while restoring full sewer function.
